Analysis Note
The specific activity was determined by the dose-dependent proliferation of WISH (heteroploid human amnion cell line) in presence of VSV (vesicular stomatitis virus).
Application
Interferon α 2A human has been used to check its antiviral action against chikungunya virus. It has also been used as a control to check the antiviral cytokine induction of Korean red ginseng.
Biochem/physiol Actions
IFNA2 is a type 1 interferon which acts as the first line of defense, and offers protection against pathogenic invasion.
Interferon α 2A (IFN-α 2A) belongs to the type I interferon protein family and is produced by many cell types in response to viral infection. It has antiproliferative and antitumor activities, as well as induction of apoptosis and the inflammatory response. IFN-α 2A enhances the expression of MHC proteins by increasing the presentation of antigen peptides and activates cytotoxic T cells.
General description
The IFNA2 (interferon alpha 2) gene is mapped to human chromosome 9p21.3. It is considered to be a prototypic type I IFN subtype. The encoded protein contains 165 amino acid. Ifna2 protein structure possesses five α-helices, linked by two disulfide bonds.
